
When sourcing rolling bearings for pumps, conveyors, motors and other industrial equipment, one of the most frequent questions engineers and procurement managers search on Google is: should I choose sealed bearings or shielded bearings?
The two common types are 2RS rubber contact seal bearings and ZZ metal shield bearings.
Both are designed to keep contaminants away from the bearing raceway and rolling elements, but they perform differently under operating conditions.
ZZ metal shields are non-contact thin metal plates mounted on both sides of the bearing. There is a tiny gap between the shield and inner ring. The advantage is low friction heat and higher maximum rotating speed. Metal shields can block large particles, but fine dust, moisture and chemical vapour can still penetrate. They are commonly used for clean, dry and high-speed working environments. Metal shield bearings are usually pre-greased and can be re-lubricated by removing the shields.
2RS rubber sealed bearings use rubber lips that touch the inner ring surface. The contact lip creates a much better barrier against fine dust, water splash and light contamination. The downside is higher friction, which reduces the maximum allowable speed. Once the seal is installed, the bearing is mostly maintenance-free. It is widely used in dirty, humid outdoor or processing plant conditions.
