How to Maintain Bearings in High Dust and Humid Environment

Dust moisture and corrosive humidity are the top two killers of industrial bearings. In workshops with heavy dust, high humidity or outdoor operating conditions, bearings easily suffer from rust, grease contamination, abrasive wear and stuck rotation. Correct targeted maintenance can double bearing service life and reduce unexpected equipment downtime.

1. Select Dustproof & Anti-Rust Bearing Grade

Environment adaptation is the first line of defense:

• Choose bearings with double rubber seals (2RS) or labyrinth seals to block dust and water vapor

• Prefer stainless steel or corrosion-resistant coated bearings for long-term humid scenarios

• Avoid open-type bearings, which are extremely vulnerable to particle invasion

2. Use Specialized Waterproof & Thickened Greaseimage.png

Standard lithium grease fails rapidly in humid dusty conditions:

• Adopt water-resistant, anti-rust thickened grease to resist moisture emulsification

• Add anti-abrasive additives to reduce wear caused by inhaled fine dust

• Do not mix different grease types, which will lead to lubrication failure

3. Optimize Grease Filling & Regreasing Cycle

Adjust lubrication strategy for harsh environments:

• Fill 60%~75% of internal bearing space (higher than standard filling rate) for auxiliary sealing

• Shorten regreasing interval by 30% compared with normal conditions

• Replace grease immediately once it turns gray, muddy or emulsified

4. Daily Sealing & Environmental Protection

Simple external protection greatly reduces failure risk:

• Regularly check seal integrity, replace damaged seals in time

• Install external dust covers for shaft extension positions

• Keep equipment ventilation dry to reduce ambient humidity

5. Regular Inspection & Contamination Removal

• Check bearing running noise and temperature weekly

• Clean dust accumulation on the bearing housing surface regularly

• Disassemble and clean deeply contaminated bearings before relubrication
