Long Term Storage Maintenance Method for Spare Bearings

A large number of premature bearing failures are caused by improper long-term storage, not operating wear. Spare bearings stored in warehouses for months or years are prone to rust, grease emulsification, seal aging and permanent deformation without standardized preservation. 

Here we share industrial standard long-term storage methods to keep your standby bearings intact for future use.

1. Standard Warehouse Environment Requirements

Environment is the core of bearing long-term preservation:

- Keep constant humidity below 60% and temperature between 10℃~25℃

- Avoid coastal warehouses, direct moisture, salt fog and corrosive gas contact

- Keep away from vibration equipment; long-term vibration causes raceway indentation

- No direct sunlight exposure to prevent rubber seal aging

2. Original Packaging Retention Rule

Do not disassemble factory packaging before installation:

- Keep original vacuum anti-rust packaging, plastic pipe and outer carton intact

- Do not remove anti-rust oil film and inner desiccant

- For opened stock bearings, re-seal with vacuum moisture-proof bag immediately

3. Correct Stacking & Placement Method

Wrong stacking leads to permanent bearing deformation:

- Small & medium bearings: Flat stacking, no excessive height compression

- Large heavy-duty roller bearings: Vertical standing storage, avoid horizontal flattening

- Keep clearance between ground and goods pallet to prevent ground moisture penetration

- Separate different bearing types to avoid mixed metal contamination

4. Regular Rotation & Inspection Cycle

Bearings cannot be stored statically forever:

- Rotate stored bearings every 3–6 months to prevent grease settlement

- Check surface rust, packaging damage and seal aging quarterly

- Replace desiccant and supplementary anti-rust oil for over 12-month stock

5. Shelf Life Reference Standard

- Sealed factory new bearings: Effective storage life 24 months under standard environment

- Opened / repackaged bearings: Recommended use within 12 months

- Stainless steel / corrosion resistant bearings: Max storage life up to 36 months
